Dan Dankner released to house arrest

Former Bank Hapoalim chair Dan Dankner and former Israel Land Administration chair Yaakov Efrati were arrested five days ago on suspicion of bribery.

Former Bank Hapoalim chairman Dan Dankner was released today to conditional house arrest. Former Israel Land Administration (ILA) chairman Yaakov Efrati, who was arrested together with Dankner last week, is also expected to be released to conditional house arrest.

Dankner and Efrati were arrested five days ago as part of the Israel Police investigation into the Holyland affair. The police suspect that Dankner bribed Efrati to promote various projects by Israel Salt Industries Ltd., a company controlled at the time by the Dankner family. Dankner is also suspected of conspiracy to commit a crime, bribery, fraud and breach of trust, making false entries in corporate documents, tax offenses, and money laundering.

At the start of the hearing on his remand, Dankner said, "It's tough, but I am certain of my innocence."
