Elta sells blimp-borne radar

The system covers hundreds of square kilometers of ground, providing increased early warning capability.

Israel Aerospace Industries Ltd. (IAI) (TASE: ARSP.B1) subsidiary Elta Systems Group has sold a helium blimp-borne radar to a East Asian customer for $57 million. The company did not disclose the name of the buyer.

The EL/M 2083 phased array radar system can cover hundreds of square kilometers of ground, providing increased early warning capability. The radar is installed in a large tethered balloon or blimp.

Elta general manager Nissim Hadas said, "Elta has great experience in developing airborne warning systems installed on a variety of manned and unmanned platforms for use on land, sea, and in the air."

A few days ago, Elta won two contracts, worth $33 million altogether, with two Asian countries for the sale of EL/M 2022 airborne marine reconnaissance systems. Market sources say that the customers were India and South Korea.
