Portugal mobile co deploys Comverse visual voicemail

Visual voicemail allows users to hear voice messages as soon as they are recorded -- without requiring specific handsets.

Comverse Technology Inc.'s (Pink Sheets: CMVT.PK) visual voicemail has been deployed by Portugal's largest mobile operator.

The customer, Portuguese mobile telecommunications provider TMN, is a subsidiary of the Portugal Telecom Group. TMN has more than 7 million customers.

Visual voicemail allows users to hear voice messages as soon as they are recorded -- without requiring specific handsets. TMN Portugal selected a "clientless" form of Comverse Visual Voicemail, which notifies subscribers with a multimedia message (MMS) about the caller's identity and message length and time. Subscribers then click to listen, and the message also can be stored and forwarded.

According to Comverse, it has more than two-thirds of visual voicemail commercial deployments worldwide.

Comverse president of global sales Dror Bin said, "Clientless deployment puts Visual Voicemail where it should be -- into the hands of as many users as possible -- as fast as possible. "Results from TMN support the principle that when callers know message delivery is instantaneous, they deposit more voice messages. Similarly, the relevance of immediate listening stimulates people to return more calls."

Bin also said that adding multimedia capabilities to voicemail paves the way for other revenue generating opportunities and services, such as branding and mobile advertising.

Comverse shares closed at $5.75 on Friday, giving a market cap of $1.16 billion.
