Airports Authority declares fuel crisis over

Airlines are demanding tens of millions of shekels compensation from the government.

The Israel Airports Authority (IAA) last night declared that the jet fuel crisis is officially over. The IAA said that the stocks of jet fuel at Ben Gurion Airport are in order and fit for use. From this morning, aircraft taking off from Israel will not be required to inspect their fuel tanks.

Yesterday, "Globes" reported that representatives of Israel and foreign airlines met to discuss the huge financial damage they had suffered following the discovery of contaminated fuel at the airport last Thursday. After initial discussions, the airlines decided that they will demand tens of millions of shekels in compensation shekels from the government.

The airlines said that they do not plan waiting until enquiries discover who was at fault and somebody takes responsibility. They are asking for the state to take responsibility.

On Monday, Minister of Transport Israel Katz had announced at a press conference that the jet fuel contamination crisis was over.

However, many foreign airlines have continued to refuel in neighboring countries rather than at Ben Gurion airport.
