"Stop trying to establish a fait accompli," said the tent protest leaders in a sharply worded letter sent to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Minister of Finance Yuval Steinitz, and Minister of Housing and Construction Ariel Atias yesterday. The letter was signed by National Union of Israeli Students chairman Itzik Smuly and Dror Israel chairman Pesach Housfater.
The tent protesters said that while the Prime Minister's Bureau was outwardly preparing for dialogue, Atias was simultaneously taking decisions for unclear purposes. On Thursday, the Israel Land Authority will discuss some of the issues raised by the protesters, including affordable housing, rental housing, and student dorms.
"These proposals are being without consulting with us, and raise concern of an improper attempt to promote policies that were already decided upon," said Smuly and Housfater. "If the government intends to hold a genuine dialogue with the protesters' representatives, it must cease all unilateral actions that establish a fait accompli. This is a fundamental demand for holding a genuine dialogue."
