Knesset c'tee approves NIS 2.7b defense budget supplement

Defense budget supplements totaled NIS 3.9 billion in 2011.

The Knesset Joint Committee for the Defense Budget today approved a NIS 2.7 billion supplement for defense. The supplement includes NIS 7.4 million previously approved for IDF Yeshivot Hesder units, and NIS 8 million compensation for the building freeze in Judea and Samaria.

Just last week, the Knesset Finance Committee approved a NIS 780 million defense budget supplement, against the wishes of the Ministry of Finance to cut the defense budget in favor of social spending, such as expanding free education to toddlers - one of the recommendations of the Trajtenberg Committee.

In mid-August, the Finance Committee approved a NIS 420 million defense budget supplement. Today's decision brings the total supplements for the year to NIS 3.9 billion.

According to the Ministry of Finance, defense budget supplements totaled NIS 3.5 billion in 2010, and NIS 3 billion in 2009.
