Unemployment hits 7%

The unemployment rate rose to 7% in the second quarter, the Central Bureau of Statistics reported today, from 6.9% in the preceding quarter.

The unemployment rate for people aged 25-64 rose to 6.1% in the second quarter from 5.9% in the first quarter.

Participation in the labor force by people aged over 15 rose to 63.6% in the second quarter from 62.8% in the preceding quarter. Participation in the labor force by people aged 15-24 rose to 59.1% in the second quarter from 58.5% in the preceding quarter, and participation in the labor force by people aged25-64 rose to 79% in the second quarter from 778% in the preceding quarter. 77% of employees had full-time jobs in the second quarter, down from 77.3% in the preceding quarter.

Israel's biggest labor problem is not unemployment, but low participation in the labor force, mainly by Arab women and haredi (ultra-orthodox) men.
