Monthly layoffs hit 3-year high

16,000 Israelis were fired from their jobs in July, 2012, a three-year high, the Israel National Employment Service reported today, 65.5% of the 24,573 new jobseekers who reported to the service during the month.

The number of jobseekers rose 1.2% to 211,617, in original figures, in July from 197,842 in June and 201,503 in July 2011. 35% of the jobseekers in June, 72,217 persons, were unemployed for more than 270 days during the preceding year.

The number of employed rose by 0.5%, compared with June to 187,200 persons in July, in trend figures. The number of unemployed has risen steadily since November 2011.

Demand for employees rose 4% to 23,400 in July from 22,500 in June, but was down 9.2% from 25,800 persons in July 2011. 54.6% of the demand for employees in July was for skilled workers.
