Israel Police sets up cyber unit

The unit will have 60 police officers and will be responsible for building a security network for fighting cyber crime.

Israel Police Commissioner Yohanan Danino today announced the establishment of cyber unit. The cyber unit will have 60 police officers and will be responsible for building a security network for fighting cyber crime.

"Last week, I participated in the Interpol General Assembly in Rome. The meeting said that cyber crime was one of the greatest threats facing police forces worldwide," said Danino. "I am pleased to announce on this stage the decision to establish a new cyber crime unit at the Israel Police. The unit is being established with joint financing from the Police and the Ministry of Finance."

Danino said that terrorist organizations and organized crime had similar features. "They transform from local gangs to global gangs, from hierarchal organizations into networked organizations, and their level of sophistication is rising. Criminal smuggling routes are used as a platform for terrorism. This is also the case in an increasingly significant area - cyber crime - which has the characteristics of terrorism."
