Rami Levy: I'm the only new mobile co making money

"The average salary of my employees is higher than at competing supermarkets."

Rami Levy says that he has no plans to sell Rami Levy Communications Ltd. "I am the only new mobile company making a profit today. All the others are losing money," Levy said yesterday talking to Prof. Yaron Zelekha at the Kiryat Ono Academic College. Levy added, "Within a few years, only the big mobile carriers will remain, and one or two mobile virtual network operators (MVNO)."

Commenting on the "mobile for a shekel" plan launched six weeks ago, he said, "My intention isn't to break the market, but to benefit the consumer."

Asked about salaries at his supermarket chain, Rami Levy Chain Stores Hashikma Marketing 2006 Ltd. (TASE:RMLI), Levy said, "The average salary of my employees is higher than the average salary at competing supermarkets. I always make sure of this vis-à-vis the competition."

Levy said that the Tel Aviv-Jaffa Municipality did not want Rami Levy to open a supermarket in the city. "The Tel Aviv Municipality has no interest in opening big stores in the city center. I really want to come to Tel Aviv, I've already rented a place, but because of bureaucracy, after two years, I concluded that I could not open a store where I wanted."

Levy reiterated his promise to reach 50 supermarkets by 2015. Commenting on competition against other low-cost supermarket chains, such as Osher Ad, he said, "A person who knows how to run his business at the lowest operating cost, while still benefiting the consumer, will win. The fact that other supermarket chains are following my lead is my victory."
