Ashdod Port workers c'ttee chairman takes leave

Alon Hassan has suspended himself after conflict of interest allegations over businesses he owns that work with Ashdod Port.

Ashdod Port Company Ltd. workers committee chairman Alon Hassan today announced that he was taking a leave of absence following conflict of interest allegations over private businesses that he owns that work with Ashdod Port. Histadrut chairman Ofer Eini has accepted the decision.

"The Histadrut will continue to stand by the workers ahead of the upcoming negotiations on the future of the ports," said the Histadrut (General Federation of Labor in Israel) in a statement. "The Histadrut chairman intends to amend the Histadrut's constitution to ban a committee member from owning private businesses that have a business relationship with his place of work."

Top Histadrut officials reportedly hinted to Hassan that he should take a leave of absence, after Eini intended to summon Hassan before the disciplinary committee, which could have removed him from his post.
