"Ma'ariv" fails to pay June salaries

Workers committee: Management says that they will only be paid if the agreement is signed. This is scandalous and illegal.

Negotiations between the management and employees at Hebrew daily "Ma'ariv" broke down, after it failed to pay salaries for June. Talks with the journalists continued for an hour, even though no salaries were paid, but the printing house workers committee notified management that it would not resume talks until salaries were paid.

"Ma'ariv's" management and employees held three days of talks, after publisher Shlomo Ben-Tzvi demanded that the employees accept across-the-board cutbacks.

Histadrut Trade Union Division vice chairman Amir Yaron said in response, "I take a very severe view that 'Ma'ariv's' management, headed by Shlomo Ben-Tzvi, has turned the employees' salaries into a hostage for the paper's recovery plan. We will not permit this."

The "Ma'ariv" workers committee said in response, "Salaries have not been paid, and management says that they will only be paid if the agreement is signed. This is a scandalous and illegal condition, a gun to the head. The printing house's workers committee has announced a halt to negotiations so long as salaries are not paid. The news desk is not working, and administration has partly suspended work until salaries are paid."

"Ma'ariv's" management has declined to comment at this time.
