Turkel: Media reports on Frenkel unfounded

The Turkel Committee is leaning toward accepting Jacob Frenkel's version of events on the alleged shoplifting.

"The appointment of governor Frenkel is being handled, and the media reports are often very tendentious and are unfounded, Turkel Committee chairman Judge (Emeritus) Yaakov Turkel told “IDF Radio" (Galei Zahal) today in his first public comments on the alleged shoplifting of a bottle of perfume by Bank of Israel governor-designate Jacob Frenkel.

Frenkel allegedly shoplifted the bottle from a duty-free shop at the Hong Kong airport seven years ago. He did not inform the Turkel Committee of the incident, but Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein is now examining the case.

Frenkel has already handed over documents from the Hong Kong authorities, which he claims clear him of any wrongdoing. Nonetheless, he has been summoned for another meeting before the Tukel Committee before Weinstein submits his opinion.

The Turkel Committee is leaning toward accepting Frenkel's version of events, and to relegate the incident to insignificance.
