Postal workers to strike Monday

Post office employees are holding a one-day strike to protest against 130 layoffs.

The workers committee of the Israel Postal Co. has announced that employees will stage a one-day protest strike tomorrow (Monday) following management's decision to fire 130 non-tenured staff. The workers committee has been in a protracted dispute with management following steps to restructure the organization of the company with the company in a deeply troubled financial situation.

Last week, Israel Postal Co. CEO Haim Elmoznino, announced a series of immediate measures to improve the cash flow situation and bring swift streamlining steps to strengthen the company's standing. Management is supported by the Government Companies Authority and the Ministry of Finance, which are backing these management measures despite opposition from the Ministry of Communications, which has been marginalized.

Israel Postal Co. said, "The company's management is working intensively to save the livelihoods of thousands of families. Among other things the company is taking emergency measures within its powers to stop the deterioration and is striving to implement a comprehensive recovery plan. It is surprising that in such a complex period for the company, the workers committee has decided that rather than mobilizing to help, it is deepening the crisis."
