Informed sources said that Supreme Court President Miriam Naor had gone too far by cutting off contact with Minister of Justice Ayelet Shaked.

Supreme Court President Miriam Naor and Minister of Justice Ayelet Shaked met today for the first time since Naor announced last week that she was terminating her dialogue with Shaked about the new appointments to the Supreme Court. Shaked today published a list of 28 candidates for the four Supreme Court positions to be vacated next year.

Sources informed about the work of the committee for appointing justices told "Globes" today that Naor had realized that she had gone too far in breaking off contact with Shaked, following Shaked's support for a bill eliminating the requirement for approval of candidates by seven of the nine committee members.

At today's meeting, it was decided to suspend the bill for the time being, but Shaked is reserving the right to renew her support for it, if necessary.

The "Yedioth Ahronoth" daily today reported that some Supreme Court justices did not favor the letter Naor sent to Shaked breaking off discussions, and informed Naor that they opposed boycotts and ostracism. Naor understood the message, and initiated a return to cooperation and dialogue with the Minister of Justice.

Most of the 28 candidates on the list were mentioned for the purpose of paying respect to them; they are not considered serious candidates with a real change of being selected.

The more serious candidates for the Supreme Court include Tel Aviv District Court Judge Chaled Kabub, Haifa District Court Judge Yosef Elron, Haifa District Court Judge Ron Sokol, Tel Aviv District Court Judge Dr. Michal Agmon-Gonen, Haifa District Court Judge Yael Willner, Jerusalem District Court Judge Nava Ben-Or, Prof. Gideon Sapir, and Prof. Yifat Bitton. At the same time, in the current mood between the two sides, surprises are possible, and candidates considered not as strong can be selected as a compromise if each of the sides sticks to its position.

Now that the list of candidates has been published, the public has 45 days to submit objections to the candidates, after which the committee can select the new Supreme Court justices. During this period of time, the committee members will continue to discuss the selection of the justices, unless one of the sides decides to make on a show of force by cutting off contact.
