The Tel Aviv District Planning and Building Commission today approved for deposit a plan for 800 housing units and commercial and business space on the site of the IDF Horodetzki intelligence base near Hashalom Road and the Bitzaron neighborhood in Tel Aviv. The plan covers 130 dunam (32.5 acres), with 4,650 sq.m. of commercial space, 16,500 sq.m. of office space, and public buildings, 27 dunam (6.75 acres) of open public spaces.
Under the plan, designed by the Naama Malis architectural firm, construction on the site will include 15-storey buildings and one 25-storey building on Hashalom Road. Historic buildings are preserved in the plan, including the Tel Haim broadcasting station, which was the Voice of Israel's first broadcasting station and broadcast live the signing of Israel's declaration of independence, making it a significant part of the Israel's radio broadcasting history. The broadcasting station includes several buildings, a yard, antennas, and an underground bunker with well-preserved old broadcasting equipment. In addition to the historic buildings, old trees on the site dating back to Israel's beginning will also be preserved.
It will take many years before tenants receive the keys to apartments in the new neighborhood. The intelligence base is still active, and a Ministry of Defense representative previously stated at a public meeting that the target evacuation date was 2022.
