The sandstorms are clearing as rain has begun throughout Israel with snow in the north.

The sand and dust storms that hit Israel over the past 48 hours were the worst such storms in the past five years, the Ministry of Environmental Protection reports.

The deep depression over the Middle East resulted in high levels of air pollution and a 40% rise in appeals for medical help due to respiratory problems received by the Magen David Adom ambulance service. In all there were 260 such requests over the past 24 hours and the high air pollution hit the elderly hardest.

The situation eased this afternoon as heavy rains began falling this afternoon, cleansing the air. Light snow fell on Mount Hermon, the Golan Heights, and Galilee peaks as temperatures dropped. The heavy rain is expected to continue throughout the country until Saturday afternoon, with floor warnings for the coast and wadis.
