Eini postpones resignation as Histadrut chairman

Histadrut chairman Ofer Eini will delay his resignation until after the Supreme Court rules on the election of his successor.

Histadrut chairman Ofer Eini will postpone his resignation, which was due at a Histadrut meeting next week, until after the Supreme Court rules on the appointment of his successor. Eini had planned to resign on February 1, but he will have to wait.

The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear an appeal by MK Eitan Cabel (Labor) against a District Court decision that allowed Eini and the rest of the Histadrut leadership to appoint Histadrut Trade Unions Division chairman Avi Nissenkorn as Eini's successor at a vote by the Histadrut Legislative Assembly, rather than by a general election. On Thursday, the Supreme Court issued an injunction staying the decision of the District Court, freezing the election for the Histadrut chairman.

Supreme Court Judge Elyakim Rubinstein ruled that the hearing on Cabel's appeal will be held no later than mid-February, and that no elections will be held beforehand. This means that Eini will have to wait at least a month or two to resign, in order to avoid leaving the union without a leader during a critical period of labor struggles and reforms.
