Israel and the Palestinians agreed last night on a 24-hour extension to the cease-fire while talks proceed.

Israel and the Palestinians agreed last night on a 24-hour extension to the cease-fire in the Gaza Strip and to continue their indirect talks in Cairo on a long-term arrangement. According to an Israeli diplomatic source, the sides agreed to extend the truce at Egypt's request. A Palestinian source, speaking to Walla! News, said that several issues had been settled between the sides, chiefly humanitarian matters, but that there was still no agreement on the substantive issues, among them demilitarization of the Gaza Strip, and the construction of a seaport and airport there. These issues will be deferred for later discussion. So far, the source stressed, Hamas has not agreed to the formula that Egypt proposes.
