Histadrut chairman Avi Nissenkorn: We are embarking on an uncompromising struggle again contract labor.

Histadrut (General Federation of Labor in Israel) chairman Avi Nissenkorn said today that the Histadrut would embark on an "uncompromising struggle again contract labor." He held a press conference in Tel Aviv and declared a general strike, starting on July 22.

"The workers are the country's infrastructure. They pull it forward, and many of them do it from faith - someone who studied to be a nurse did it in order to serve the public, and someone who set out to become a teacher did it out of faith. They should not be treated like contract labor. The Ministry of Finance is destroying the country's infrastructure," Nissenkorn added.

Nissenkorn declared, "We won't give up and won't give way until this issue is solved."

"Israeli society has lost direction," Nissenkorn stated. "There's a lack of logic here, because I'm sure that each one of us is unwilling to see such pictures, and each of us thinks about himself and his spouse and his children - and is unwilling to see such pictures. These people shouldn't go on being invisible - it shouldn't be allowed.

"You know, the general school holiday during the Passover holiday - for many workers, it is a joy, because they're with their families. For many other workers, though, it's a disappointment, because the state doesn't pay for this vacation. They're in poverty - they get no pay for a week. A month of punishment. This is our country. We mustn't accept it."
