Histadrut chairman Avi Nissenkorn threatens to call a general strike in two weeks.
Histadrut (General Federation of Labor in Israel) chairman Avi Nissenkorn this morning declared a general labor dispute in Israel. The Histadrut says that the grounds for the dispute are the low minimum wage, the increasing use of contract workers, and "the state's contempt in failing to apply an extension order concerning the employment of people with disabilities in the public service." The significance of the work dispute is that the Histadrut is now entitled to call a general strike in two weeks.
Nissenkorn is demanding that the minimum wage be raised from its current level of NIS 4,300 to NIS 5,300. The Histadrut has been demanding a rise in the minum wage for some time and is also conducting a range of work disputes in the public sector including at government ministries, the National Insurance Institute, Israel Postal Company, and several other government-owned companies.
