Hotel overnights in Israel rose 6% in April while incoming tourism rose 40%.

Hotel overnights in April in Israel totaled 2.1 million, up 6% from 2016, up 10% from 2015 but down 1% from 2014, the Israel Hotels Association reports. The rise is disappointing when taking into account that incoming tourism during April was a record 350,000, according to the Ministry of Tourism, up 40% from April 2016.

In part the disappointing hotel overnights figures are due to more Israeli preferring to vacation abroad, rather than in Israel, with the strength of the shekel offering better value packages abroad.

Hotel overnights in April by foreign tourists were up 23% compared with last year, the Israel Hotels Association reports. So there is still a shortfall in tourist overnights compared with last year, with probably more tourists finding Internet based accommodation in private homes such as through Airbnb.
