Trustee seeks "Makor Rishon" sale to "Israel Today"

Ran Berdachev cannot justify selling "Ma'ariv."

Ran Berdachev, the trustee for the former Hebrew dailies of Shlomo Ben-Tzvi, "Ma'ariv" and "Makor Rishon", has asked the court for permission to sell "Makor Rishon" and the "Ma'ariv" online edition nrg to Sheldon Adelson's daily "Israel Today" for NIS 17 million: NIS 14 million for "Makor Rishon" and NIS 3 million for "nrg".

The trustee does not recommend selling "Ma'ariv", after he concluded that the offers from the investor group headed by Udi Ragonis and the group presenting "The Jerusalem Post" did not justify a sale.

"Israel Today" promised to keep at least 90% of "Makor Rishon's" administrative staff and correspondents, 114 of 120 employees, and 90% of its freelancers and distribution staff. Now, the fate of "Ma'ariv" hangs in the balance. The newspaper is continuing to publish a limited evening edition, and is running out of money. Berdachev will initiate special proceedings to sell the newspaper in an effort to save as many jobs as possible.
