BiolineRX heart implant wins Windhover Top Ten award

BL-1040 is a resorbable liquid polymer for strengthening heart muscle after a heart attack.

Healthcare industry business intelligence provider Windhover Information Inc. has named BiolineRX Ltd. (TASE:BLRX) treatment "as one of the top 10 most promising cardiovascular projects in development available for strategic partnering". BL-1040 is a novel myocardial implant for the treatment of acute myocardial infarction (heart attack).

Windhover's Top 10 candidates are measured according to unmet medical need, market potential, diversity of indications, strong science, multi-level partnering opportunities, potential for new opportunities beyond initial indications, and corporate stability.

The BL-1040 implant is a resorbable liquid polymer that is administered via the coronary artery during standard catheterization and flows into the damaged heart muscle. The liquid polymerizes within the infarcted cardiac tissue and forms a protective scaffold that strengthens the heart muscle and is excreted naturally from the body within six weeks after injection, leaving behind a stronger, more stable heart muscle. The treatment was developed by Professor Smadar Cohen and Professor Jonathan Leor from the Department of Biotech and Biomedical Engineering at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. BiolineRX licensed it through BG Negev Technologies and Applications Ltd.

BiolineRX CEO Dr. Morris Laster said, "We are extremely proud that BL-1040 has been selected as one of the top ten most innovative cardiovascular treatments, further recognition of BL-1040’s potential to become a revolutionizing new therapy for acute heart attacks." He noted, "BL-1040, currently in Phase I/II clinical trials, is the first compound that attempts to treat damaged cardiac tissue resulting from an acute heart attacks and addresses a tremendous unmet medical need."

Winhover has invited BioLineRX to present data on BL-1040 at the Therapeutic Area Partnerships conference in Philadelphia in November.
