Comverse solution helps avoid bill shock

About one in six Americans experienced the cell phone surprise.

Comverse Technology Inc. (Pink Sheets: CMVT) has launched a solution for dealing with "bill shock" among mobile telephone users. The new solution enables a user to program his or her mobile telephone to restrict or cap the use of a service, or block access to a service by a family member. The solution can also notify the user when a service or family member is nearing the cap.

Bill shock is an aspect of mobile telephones well-known to their users. The issue is not just the small print in the contracts with the mobile operator, which can result in unpleasant surprises in the monthly bill, but uncontrolled usage of the mobile telephone, especially by children and teenagers, which cause unplanned expenses.

The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) last week released a study that found that one in six Americans experienced bill shock, about 30 million people.

Comverse has already installed its solution with Singaporean operator StarHub Ltd. (SGX: T54), and with Alaskan operator General Communication Inc. (GCI) (Nasdaq: GNCMA).

Comverse's share closed at $8.30 in New York yesterday.
