Gov't to set up Dan region transport authority

The idea is based on New York's MTA, Transport for London, and Paris' RATP.

The government will set up a metropolitan transport authority for the Dan Region. The new authority will apparently be announced at the meeting of metropolitan Tel Aviv mayors next week, in the presence of Minister of Transport Israel Katz.

The government plans for the authority to initially operate on a voluntary basis by the parties involved, while legislative procedures will begin to establish the authority's status and responsibilities. Sources inform ''Globes'' that metropolitan Tel Aviv mayors have given their consent to the authority, which is being promoted by the Tel Aviv-Jaffa Municipality.

Tel Aviv Mayor Ron Huldai has been promoting the idea of a metropolitan transport authority for years. The idea is based on New York's Metropolitan Transport Authority (MTA), Transport for London, and Paris' Autonomous Operator of Parisian Transports (RATP).
