Applied Materials Inc. (Nasdaq: AMAT) today unveiled a new metrology system, UVision 5, which was developed and will be produced in Israel at an estimated investment of tens of millions of dollars.

The UVision 5 is a wafer inspection system for 20-nanometer technology production. The system scans the wafers at different production stages to minimize flaws, improving the final product's reliability and the efficiency of the manufacturing process.

Maintaining the efficiency of the semiconductor manufacturing process has become increasingly important as the cost of new production lines reaches $5-6 billion. Major chipmakers fully utilize their production lines to try and make a return on the investment.

Applied Materials has 1,000 employees at its Israeli development center, which is run by Applied Materials Israel general manager Itai Rosenfeld.
