Netanyahu attacks regulators

"Israel suffers from a surfeit of regulations in all areas of government."

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu yesterday launched a fierce attack on Israel's regulators. "Israel suffers from a surfeit of regulations in all areas of government. Not only is there too much regulation, but we have more than once reached the point in which one regulator fights another," he told a meeting of the Economic Organizations Liaison Committee. He added that the government should deal with the over-regulation, and that regulations must not take control of the economy.

The meeting, called an "emergency meeting", was held to discuss business sector distress. Netanyahu said that he considered cooperation between government and the business sector to be very important, and he called on business leaders to continue to work with the government.

Netanyahu said, "We are in a daily struggle for the economy. We have set a deficit target for next year, and I wish to make it clear that we will not breach the budget framework under any circumstances, because breaking it will lead to the breaking of tools. I attach great importance to cooperation between the government and economic organizations in the economy and you are the spearhead of economic activity. We, as the government, should increase the cooperation, and I, as prime minister, want to meet with you more to hear things from the field."
