Journalists at Hebrew daily "Haaretz" and its business affiliate "TheMarker" will hold a one-day strike today, and Thursday's edition will not be published.
"We are forced to take this measure after we realized that Amos Schocken and management do not intend to change their plans to lay off 100 employees. This is a regrettable action, but we have no choice," said the "Haaretz" workers committee in a statement.
Today at 4 pm, all "Haaretz" and "TheMarker" employees will put down their tools, hold a one-hour general meeting, and go home. "No one will work during the general meeting, and no one will return to work afterwards. No one will write articles, take pictures, edit, design, comment, produce, or interview until the strike is over," said the workers committee. "'Haaretz'"s management continues to do what it wants, ignores our claims, and refuses to respond to our demands. The time has come for a general strike."
Sources inform ''Globes'' that "TheMarker" has been urging its correspondents and editors to complete their work before the strike begins. The workers committee told "Globes", "The hour is not set in stone. If we see pressure to bring the deadline forward, we bring the strike forward. There will be no Thursday edition, period."
