Liberman resigns

"I am doing this because I believe that the citizens of Israel are entitled to cast their votes after the matter has already been decided."

A day after Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein announced that he would indict Minister of Foreign Affairs Avigdor Liberman in the affair of the ambassador to Belarus, Liberman announced his resignation yesterday afternoon. Liberman said that he would waive his immunity from prosecution as a member of Knesset in order to facilitate a speedy legal proceeding, in the hope that the matter would be over before the Knesset election on January 22.

"I am doing this because I believe that the citizens of Israel are entitled to cast their votes after the matter has already been decided, that is to say, that a legal decision should be made before the elections, and I will then be able to continue to serve the State of Israel and the citizens of Israel as part of a strong and united leadership that will deal with the security, diplomatic and economic challenges that the State of Israel faces," Liberman wrote.
