AeroSvit's bankruptcy strands hundreds of Israelis

The Ukrainian airline was the seventh largest carrier at Ben Gurion Airport in 2012 and was used for follow-on flights.

The bankruptcy of Ukrainian carrier AeroSvit Airlines has left hundreds of Israelis worried about losing payments for reservations. Many Israelis used the airline to make follow-on flights from Kiev to destinations in North America and the Far East, because of its low fares.

According to the Israel Airports Authority, Aerosvit carried 290,000 passengers to and from Ben Gurion Airport in January-November 2012, 15% more than in the corresponding period of 2011. It was the seventh largest carrier at the airport last year.

In December, AeroSvit cancelled almost all of its flights from Ben Gurion Airport and follow-on flights. On Monday, hundreds of Chabad hassids were stranded in Kiev, because of a cancelled flight. The Israel Tourism and Travel Agents Association says that passengers who bought tickets through agencies should receive their money back within 60 days from the date of purchase.
