Egg shortage hits Israel

The severe winter weather, the loss of a major egg supplier, and higher seasonal demand are behind the shortage.

The severe winter weather has caused a nationwide egg shortage. Additional factors are the loss of a major egg supplier, and higher seasonal demand. There is no shortage of free-range eggs, for which there is little demand because of their high price.

In early January, the Ministry of Agriculture revoked the egg marketing licenses of Yossi Eggs Ltd., which supplies 10 million eggs a month, 8% of the market. The license was revoked after a hearing by the ministry on an indictment filed against the company for smuggling eggs into Israel from the Palestinian Authority. These imported eggs are not under veterinary supervision and are therefore banned from sale in Israel.
