No train disruptions seen as drivers return to work

Israel Railways management withdrew its motion to the labor court to declare the train drivers in contempt of court.

Israel Railways train drivers returned to regular work today, after seriously disrupting service last week by claiming sick. In response, Israel Railways management withdrew its motion to the labor court to declare the train drivers in contempt of court. With the return of the train drivers to work, no disruption in service is predicted.

Last week, train drivers held a wildcat strike by calling in sick. The workers committee said that it had been warning against the new work arrangements, which forced train drivers to work continuously for as long as 9-12 hours, jeopardizing passengers. "Train drivers are collapsing because they do not receive proper rest between shifts. When we complained to management that drivers do not even receive a ten-minute break during shifts to go to the bathroom, management distributed plastic bags to drivers to collect urine," added the workers committee.
