High Court won't bring forward gas exports hearing

The High Court of Justice has rejected a petition by the government to bring forward the hearing on natural gas exports from October 20.

The High Court of Justice has rejected a petition by the government to bring forward the hearing on natural gas exports from October 20. The High Court had originally postponed the hearing on the case from Tuesday to October 20, because of the judges' schedules. An expanded panel of seven judges will hear the case.

"A number of urgent cases have accumulated recently, including hearings before an expanded panel," announced the High Court of Justice today. "There are only a few days before the Sukkot holiday. Under the circumstances, it is regrettably not possible to bring forward the hearing scheduled for October 20, 2013, (three weeks after the Sukkot holiday). The motion is denied. The hearing will be held on the scheduled date - October 20, 2013."

The High Court of Justice will hear petitions by Labor Party chairwoman MK Shelly Yachimovich and other parties, which argue that the government lacks the legal authority to make policy decisions on natural gas exports for the coming decades, but the Knesset should decide the issue.
