OECD Economics Dept head to address Israel Business Conference

Dr. Peter Jarrett will participate in the session "Bankruptcy of the health system."

Dr. Peter Jarrett, head of the OECD Economics Department, who covers France, Poland, Canada, New Zealand, Brazil, Indonesia, and Israel and author of the 2011 economic review of Israel, will participate in the "Globes" 2013 Israel Business Conference. Dr. Jarrett has held a series of senior positions during his 26 years at the OECD, including head of the Country Studies Division at the Economics Department, manager of the Japan/Ireland, the US/Iceland, and other desks.

At the Israel Business Conference, Jarrett will participate in the session "Bankruptcy of the health system". He will refer to the OECD report published shortly before the conference, "How to Improve Israel’s Health-Care System".

Israel's public has been affected by a series of events that have affected the health system. The doctors' struggle, the nurses strike, and the specialists revolt have occurred alongside a steady decline in public spending on healthcare and a corresponding rise in private financing. The public health system is basically functioning as a two-tier system: one is in a state of "collapse", with queues in corridors for regular patients; the other is a luxury system for medical tourists and holders of private insurance policies. The session's subjects will include: The collapse of public healthcare in Israel: a budget or management problem?; Is the dizzying growth of private medicine the problem or the result?; and the principles underpinning the state health insurance law.

The other participants in the session will be Chaim Sheba Medical Center - Tel Hashomer Hospital director general Prof. Zeev Rotstein, Assuta Medical Centers chairman Prof. Shuki Shemer, Chairman, and Clalit Health Services CEO Eli Dafas. "Globes" health and employment correspondent Shai Niv will moderate the session.

The 2013 "Globes" Israel Business Conference, the country's largest business conference, will be held this year under the title "The Global Economy in 2014". It is Israel's premier and most prestigious economic event, attended by decision-makers, businesspeople, government officials, academics, researchers, spokespersons, and delegations from Israel and around the world. The conference will offer analyses and insights by leading economics and academics, businesspeople, and policymakers from Israel and other countries.

The 2013 "Globes" Israel Business Conference will be held on December 8-9. 2013, at the David Intercontinental Hotel in Tel Aviv.
