"Ma'ariv" employees accept Ben-Tzvi's new cutbacks

The vote means that, on the basis of publisher Shlomo Ben-Tzvi's promise, he will continue to invest in the newspaper, after the cutbacks plan.

Employees of Hebrew daily "Ma'ariv" yesterday voted in favor of the cutbacks proposed by publisher Shlomo Ben-Tzvi. The vote by the paper's journalists was 56:43. The vote means that, on the basis of Ben-Tzvi's promise, he will continue to invest in the newspaper, after the cutbacks plan.

Under the plan, 25 more journalists will leave "Ma'ariv", the salaries of the remaining journalists will be cut, and the newspaper will move to Jerusalem. Management had earlier said that the newspaper would continue to exist only if the cutbacks plan was accepted by the employees, but if they rejected the plan, Ben-Tzvi would return the newspaper to the trustees.

After a meeting with Ben-Tzvi yesterday, Histadrut chairman Ofer Eini said, "Our objective is to save the newspaper and protect the employees' livelihoods. The meeting was held in a good atmosphere. We have a situation in which management proposed a recovery and streamlining plan. If the employees approved the proposal, we will enter intensive negotiations at 11 am tomorrow, together with the owners and the workers committee, to reach an agreement."
