The former Jerusalem Mayor was convicted of taking NIS 2 million in bribes for Yad Sarah.
Former Jerusalem Mayor Uri Lupolianski (63) is going to prison despite his serious medical condition and the fact that he did not put the bribes in his own pocket in the Holyland scandal. Tel Aviv District Court Judge David Rozen this morning handed down a 6 year prison sentence to Lupolianski who was convicted of taking more than NIS 2 million in bribes as donations to Yad Sarah, the health equipment charity that he set up and for which he was awarded the Israel Prize. Lupolianski also received a NIS 500,000 fine and an additional suspended sentence.
Rozen wrote in his judgment, "In his actions Lupolianski mocked the public's belief in its leaders. The offence of bribery pollutes public service. A person receiving a bribe is a treacherous person who betrays the trust place in him. Lupolianski got his hands filthy and deserves a punishment that expresses loud and clear, the repulsiveness of his deeds.
