China Influence and Global Trends
How deep is the crisis in China? How will its economic crisis affect the global economy? Will China continue to be the engine of emerging markets?
Sunday 9/12/2012

China's economy is one of the most interesting contemporary economic stories, with an average annual growth rate of 9.98% over the past 20 years, stunning the global economic community. For many years, there has been talk about a landing by the Chinese economy: some economists say that it will be hard landing caused by the bursting of a real estate bubble; while others say that the economy will continue its robust growth, although not at 10% a year any more. This year, China's export-oriented economy is downshifting, with growth estimated at 7.8%, although the IMF believes that growth will pick up to over 8% a year in 2013-14. China's new government claims that the country has already resumed its rapid growth. Is this possible? Is this forecast over-optimistic? Should China's new government change its growth strategy to continue the country's economic growth? Can an economy as large as China's make a controlled landing, or only crash? Does China have to change its political model, or will rising inequality, rather than the slowdown in Europe and the US tip the scales for the worse? What are the ramifications of China's slowing growth rate on the global economy and other Asian countries? What is happening in India, which is growing through a sharper slowdown as well as inflationary pressures?
